Metals, Nonmetals and Metalloids

Dmitry Mendelev saw periodic table in his sleep, and created the first periodic table arranging elements by atomic mass. Currently, on the periodic table, elements are arranged in order of the atomic number. When we look at the periodic table, we will notice a staircase on the right side of it. This staircase dvivides metals from the nonmetals. To the right of the staircase are the metals, and to the left, are nonmetals. Metalloids, elements that have both metallic and nonmetallic characters are located on the staircase. Metalloids include B (boron), Si (silicon), Ge (germanium), As (arsenic), Sb (antimony) , Te (tellurium), Po (polonium).

Some of the properties of metals are:

1. High melting and boiling point

2. Malleable (being able to hammered into sheets)

3. Ductile (being able to drawn into wires)

4. Good conductors of heat and electricity

5. Most metal are solids. Hg(mercury) is the metal that is a liquid at room temperature.

Some of the properties of nonmetal are:

1. Low melting and boiling point

2. Do not conduct heat and electricity

3. Brittle

4. Most nonmetals are gases. Iodine is a nonmetal that is a solid at room temperature.
