Preparing for the Regent in Physics

physics tutor NYC

Physics is a difficult class, usually taken in the junior year of high school. For NYC public school students, it is required to take a Regents exam at the end of the school year.

So how can you best prepare for this test?

You will need two books: Regents Exams and Answers: Physics (Barron's Regents NY), and Let's Review Physics: The Physical Setting. The second book is a review guide that covers all of the topics found on the Physics regent exam and has great practice questions at the end of each chapter. We suggest reviewing the topics and practicing the questions first. Once you feel like you have a solid understanding of the fundamentals, it is time to start with the heavy artillery.

The red Barron's regents book includes past official exams with their answers and explanations. We suggest to go over all of them, and read over the explanation for the questions you got wrong or didn't know how to do. You can also find more official tests online by visiting http://www.nysedregents.org/physics/. This website provides twenty three past exams with the correct answers. However, these exams don't have explanations. Therefore, we suggest doing the red book first followed by the exams from the website.

Another wonderful tool for Regent Physics Exam is the reference table. Let's remember that for every science Regent test, reference table is your best friend. It has all the formulas and important information needed to succeed on the test. For physics Reference table includes: a list of physics constants, coefficients of friction, electromagnetic spectrum, indices of refraction, energy level diagrams, classification of matter, electricity formulas, waves formulas, modern physics formulas, geometry and trigonometry formulas, and mechanics formulas. When in doubt, always check the reference table for correct formulas and constants.
