In which group on the Periodic Table would a nonmetallic element belong if atoms of this element tend to gain two electrons to complete their valence shell?

(1) 14

(2) 15

(3) 16

(4) 17

Answer and Explanation:

All elements on the periodic table (except H and He) follow the octet rule that states that atoms want to have an octet (eight) electrons in their outermost shell. From the question we know that the element is nonmetallic which means its on the right side of the periodic table. It needs to gain two electrons to be happy and fill its octet, which means it has six right now. The number of valence electrons equals the group number. Therefore, choice 3 must be the correct choice. We can also double check by looking at the periodic table and seeing that group 16 elements have -2 oxidation number/charge which means they want to gain two electrons.
