Identify the Lewis acid and Lewis base among the reactants in each equation.

(CH₃)₃N(g) + BF₃(g) ⇌ (CH₃)₃NBF₃(s)

F-(aq) + BF₃(aq) ⇌ BF₄-(aq)


Solution:

Lewis base is an electron pair donor and Lewis acid is an electron pair acceptor. Lewis base will have a lone pair of electrons while Lewis acid will have an incomplete octet so it could accept a pair of electrons. (CH₃)₃N(g) + BF₃(g) ⇌ (CH₃)₃NBF₃(s)

(CH₃)₃N is a Lewis base because nitrogen has a pair of electrons it can donate. BF₃ is a Lewis acid because boron has an incomplete octet and can accept a pair of electrons.


F−(aq) + BF3(aq)⇌ BF4−(aq) F- is a Lewis base because fluoride ion has a pair of electrons it can donate.

BF₃ is a Lewis acid because boron has an incomplete octet and can accept a pair of electrons.


PS: If you see a negative charge that means you have a base and a positive charge will mean acid.
