Which of the following are Brønsted-Lowry conjugate acid-base pairs in an aqueous solution?

A. HClO/HO+ B. HClO/HO+ C. HClO/HClO D. HClO/ClO

E. HClO/ClO

Solution:

A conjugate acid-base pair consists of two molecules that differ in ONE HYDROGEN ONLY. We can eliminate choices A, and B. C differs in one oxygen, and can be eliminated as well. D differs in one hydrogen and one oxygen and can be eliminated. Choice E is the correct answer choice.
