A common mistake on the psychology section of MCAT 2015.

September 10, 2015

This article will help you escape one of the most common mistakes on the psychology section of MCAT 2015.

Correlation is not causation. Those of us who are psychology majors learned this phrase very early on. Just because 2 factors correlate in a psychology study, does not mean that one causes another. I have noticed this concept being brought up in the sample MCAT test created by AAMC. Numerous times the authors ask what is and is not being tested in the study.

What you must remember is that a study cannot prove that one factor is caused by another. A study on obesity can not prove that obesity is caused by dietary choices. It can merely tell us that there is a correlation between the two.

Therefore you can always eliminate answer choices that assume causation.
