Which formula represents an alkane?

(1) C2H2

(2) C2H4

(3) C3H4

(4) C3H8

Alkanes are a category of organic compounds. The generic formula for alkanes is CnH2n+2.

What does it mean? Let's say a molecule has 3 carbons. In order to calculate the number of hydrogens we must plug in 3 instead of n and get 2*3+2 = 8. Therefore the formula for this alkane would be C3H8.

Answer (4)
