A 0.050 M aqueous solution of which compound is the best conductor of electric current?

August 2019 NY Regents Chemistry Exam

26 A 0.050 M aqueous solution of which compound is the best conductor of electric current? (1) C3H7OH

(2) C6H12O6

(3) MgSO4

(4) K2SO4

Solution: Ionic compounds (metal+nonmetal or metal+polyatomic ion) can conduct electricity. Choices 1 and 2 are both molecular compounds (all nonmetals) and would not be able to conduct electricity. MgSO4 breaks into two ions magnesium and sulfate while K2SO4 breaks into three ions, two potassium ions and one sulfate ion. The more ions the better a solution is at conducting electricity.

Answer: 4
