January 2020 NY Regents Chemistry Exam

35 A measured value for the atomic radius of platinum atoms was determined to be 143 picometers. Based on Table S, what is the percent error of this measured value? (1) 0.10%

(2) 9.1%

(3) 10.%

(4) 13%

Solution: The formula for % error is (measured value – accepted value)/accepted value*100.

Table S gives the radius of platinum atoms which is 130 pm (accepted value)

% error = ((143pm-130 pm)/130 pm) * 100

Answer: 3
