A molecule of which compound has a multiple covalent bond?

August 2018 NY Regents Chemistry Exam

22 A molecule of which compound has a multiple covalent bond?

(1) CH4

(2) C2H4 (3) C3H8

(4) C4H10

Solution: Table Q on the Reference Table shows Homologous Series of Hydrocarbons. We can see that alkenes and alkynes have multiple covalent bonds (double bond for alkenes and triple bond for alkynes). The formula for alkenes is CnH2n. C2H4 represents an alkene. The rest of the formulas are for alkanes, CnH2n+2

Answer: 2
