Regents Chemistry Exam August 2024 Question 31

31 A student calculates the density of a sample of Fe to be 7.57 grams per cubic centimeter. Based on Table S, what is the percent error for the student’s calculated density of Fe?

(1) -0.038% (3) -3.8%

(2) -0.040% (4) -4.0%

Solution:

Percent error formula can be found on Table T on the Reference Table.

% error = (measured value- accepted value)/accepted value *100%

Table S, lists the density of Fe as 7.87g/cm3 (accepted value). Let's plug all the numbers into the formula. % error = (7.57- 7.87)/7.87 *100% = - 3.8%, Choice 3.
