Regents Chemistry Exam August 2025 Question 37

37 A substance has an empirical formula of CH2 and a molar mass of 112 g/mol. What is the molecular formula for this compound?

(1) CH2 (3) C8H16 (2) C4H8 (4) C12H24

Solution:

In order to get the molecular formula, we need to first calculate the mass of empirical formula. CH2 = 12+2(1) = 14g/mol. We then divide the molar mass given by the mass of empirical formula to see how many times empirical formula goes into molecular formula. 112/14=8. We need to multiply all the subscripts in empirical formula by 8 to get C1*8H2*8 = C8H16. Choice 3 is the correct answer.
