Based on Table H, which compound has the weakest intermolecular forces at 75°C?

Regents Chemistry Exam June 2024 Question 23

23 Based on Table H, which compound has the weakest intermolecular forces at 75°C?

(1) ethanoic acid (3) propanone

(2) ethanol (4) water

Solution:

Table H shows vapor pressures of four different liquids at different temperatures. Intermolecular forces are forces of attraction between molecules. The stronger the intermolecular forces, the more tightly molecules are held together, requiring more heat to overcome these forces and transition into the vapor phase.

The higher the vapor pressure, the weaker the intermolecular forces. We are looking for a liquid with the highest vapor pressure ay 75C. Choice 3, propanone is the correct answer.
