Regents Chemistry Exam August 2025 Question 39

39 Based on Table S, a molecule of which substance contains the most polar bond?

(1) HBr (3) IBr (2) HF (4) IF

Solution:

Table S lists electronegativies of all elements. The most polar molecule would have the highest electronegativity difference between the two atoms. Let's do some calculations:

HBr = H(2.2) and Br (3.0) = 3-2.2 = 0.8

IBr = I (2.7)and Br (3.0) = 3-2.7 = 0.3

HF = H(2.2) and F (4.0) = 4-2.2 = 1.8

IF = I (2.7)and F (4.0) = 4-2.7 = 1.3

Choice 2, HF, is the correct answer because it has the highest electronegativity difference,
