Regents Chemistry Exam January 2025 Question 11

  1. Based on Table S, an atom of which element in

Group 16 has the greatest attraction for electrons

in a chemical bond?

(1) oxygen (3) selenium

(2) sulfur (4) tellurium

Solution:

Electronegativity is a scale that measures the ttraction of an element for electrons in a chemical bond. All we need to do is find the electronegativity of each element. Whichever element has the highest electronegativity is the answer choice. In this case, choice 1 is the correct answer.
