32 The table below lists properties of selected element samples at room temperature.

Based on this table, which statement describes a chemical property that can be used to differentiate two of these element samples from each other?

(1) Sodium can be differentiated from gold based on mass.

(2) Sodium can be differentiated from nickel based on the reaction with water.

(3) Nickel can be differentiated from sodium based on mass.

(4) Nickel can be differentiated from gold based on the reaction with water.

Solution:

The table lists three elements, their masses and whether they react with water or not. Sodium reacts with water while nickel and gold do not. Sodium can be differentiated from nicket bases on the reaction with water. Mass is not a chemical property and can not differentiate different elements. Choice 2 is correct.
