Regents Chemistry Exam June 2025 Question 10

10  Given the equation representing a reaction: Br + Br → Br2

Which statement describes what occurs during this reaction?

(1) Energy is released as bonds are formed.

(2) Energy is released as bonds are broken.

(3) Energy is absorbed as bonds are formed.

(4) Energy is absorbed as bonds are broken.

Solution:

When a bond is broken, energy is absorbed and when a bond is formed, energy is released. In the equation, we see two bromine atoms coming together to form Br2 molecule. This means that the bond is formed and therefore, energy will be released. Choice 1 is the correct answer.
