Regents Chemistry Exam January 2025 Question 9.

10 Given the equation representing a reaction:

F + F → F2

What occurs during this reaction?

(1) Energy is absorbed as a bond is formed.

(2) Energy is released as a bond is formed.

(3) Energy is absorbed as a bond is broken.

(4) Energy is released as a bond is broken.

Solution:

When a bond is formed, energy is released and when a bond is broken, energy is absorbed. In this reaction we can see two atoms of fluorine coming together to make one molecule. Therefore, energy will be released as bond is formed. Choice 2 is the correct answer.
