Given the equation representing a reaction:I2 → I + I What occurs during this reaction?

Regents Chemistry Exam June 2024 Question 14

14 Given the equation representing a reaction:

I2 → I + I

What occurs during this reaction?

(1) Energy is released and a bond is formed.

(2) Energy is released and a bond is broken.

(3) Energy is absorbed and a bond is broken.

(4) Energy is absorbed and a bond is formed.

Solution:

When a bond is formed, energy is released and when the bond is broken, energy is absorbed. In this case, bond is broken since we go from one molecule of I2 to two I's. This means energy needs to be absorbed. Choice 3 is the correct answer choice.
