Regents Chemistry Exam June 2025 Question 49

49 Given the equation representing a system at equilibrium:CO3^2-(aq) + H2O(l) HCO3-(aq) + OH-(aq)

Which statement describes the base in the forward reaction?

(1) The H2O(l) is the base because it accepts an H+ ion.

(2) The H2O(l) is the base because it donates an H+ ion.

(3) The CO3^2-(aq) is the base because it accepts an H+ ion.

(4) The CO3^2-(aq) is the base because it donates an H+ ion.

Solution:

A base is a subtance that accepts a proton (H+) In the equation, looking from left to right, we see CO3^2- accepting an H+ ion to become HCO3-. Choice 3 is the correct answer.
