Regents Chemistry Exam August 2025 Question 44

44 Given the incomplete equation with X representing a missing product:

CH4 + Cl2 →X + HCl Which formula represents the missing product, X?

(1) CH4Cl

(2) CH4Cl2

(3) CH3Cl

(4) CH3Cl2

Solution:

All we need to do is add all the elements on the right and left side to see what is missing. On the left we have 1 carbon atom, 4 hydrogen atoms and 2 chlorine atoms. On the right we have one hydrogen atom and 1 chlorine atom. The right side is missing 1 carbon, 3 hydrogen and 1 chlorine atoms. We get CH3Cl. Choice 3 is correct.
