5 Graphite and diamond are solid forms of carbon and have

(1) the same properties and the same crystal structure

(2) the same properties and different crystal structures

(3) different properties and the same crystal structure

(4) different properties and different crystal structures

Solution:

Graphite and diamond are the made from the same element, carbon but have different properties and structure. They are called allotropes. Graphite has layers of carbon atoms that can slide past each other, making it soft. It is used in pencils. Diamond is extremely hard because of its rigid structure.

Choice 4 is the correct answer choice.
