Regents Chemistry Exam January 2025 Question 35

35 What is a chemical name for KClO2?

(1) potassium chlorate

(2) potassium chlorite

(3) potassium hypochlorite

(4) potassium perchlorate

Solution:

KClO2 is an ionic compound because it consists of a metal (metals are to the right of the straircase on the Periodic Table) and a polyatomic ion. To name this compound, we write the name of the metal plus the name of polyatomic ion. Polyatomic ions and names can be found in Table E on the Reference Table. The name is potassium chlorite. Choice 2 is the correct answer.
