What is a chemical name for the compound PbO2?

Regents Chemistry Exam June 2024 Question 33

33 What is a chemical name for the compound PbO2?

(1) lead(I) oxide (3) lead(III) oxide

(2) lead(II) oxide (4) lead(IV) oxide

Solution:

PbO2 is an ionic compound because it is composed of a metal and a nonmetal. To name an ionic compound, you name the metal and then name the nonmetal ending in "ide". Pb is a transition metals and we need to put a roman numeral in the name signifying its oxidation number. The oxidation number for oxygen is -2 which can be found on the Periodic Table in the Reference Table given. There are two oxygens in the formula, making the charge -4. In order for the molecule to be neutral, the charge of Pb must by +4, resulting in a Roman numeral (IV). Choice 4 is the correct answer.
