Regents Chemistry Exam August 2024 Question 37
37 What is the amount of heat that must be absorbed to increase the temperature of a 130.-gram sample of water from 20.0°C to 50.0°C?
(1) 3.90 * 10^3 J (3) 4.34 * 10^4 J
(2) 1.63 10^4 J (4) 2.94 * 10^5 J
Solution:
All of the heat equations can be found on Table T in the Reference Table. An equation that involves change of temperature is q=mCΔT
where q=heat m = mass and C = specific heat capacity. ΔT = Tfinal-Tinitial
m=130.0 grams,
C = 4.18 J/g•K (Table B on the Reference Table gives specific heat capacity of water)
ΔT = Tfinal – Tinitial = 50.0°C-20.0°C = 30.0°C q=130.0 g*4.18 J/g•K *30.0°C = 16302J
