June 2017 NY Regents Chemistry Exam

11 What is the number of electrons shared between the atoms in an I2 molecule?

(1) 7

(2) 2 (3) 8

(4) 4

Solution: Iodine has 7 valence electrons according to the electron configuration on the Periodic Table. All atoms want 8 electrons. Iodine needs one more electron to have a full octet. That means it wants to share one bond with another iodine atom. One bond has two electrons in it.

Answer: 2
