Regents Chemistry Exam January 2025 Question 49

49 What is the pH value of an aqueous solution with a hydronium ion concentration 1000 times greater than an aqueous solution with a pH value of 5.0?

(1) 1.0 (3) 8.0

(2) 2.0 (4) 14.0

Solution:

Every 1pH unit change means a factor of 10. Greater hydronium ion concentration means more acidic, which means lower pH. 1000 times means 3 pH units lower. Choice 2, pH=2 is the correct answer choice.
