Regents Chemistry Exam June 2025 Question 18

18.Which combination of reactants will result in the fastest rate of reaction of a 1.0-gram sample of Zn(s) and 30. milliliters of HCl(aq) at 25°C?

(1) 1.0-g cube of Zn(s) with 1.0 M HCl(aq)

(2) 1.0-g cube of Zn(s) with 2.0 M HCl(aq)

(3) 1.0-g powdered Zn(s) with 1.0 M HCl(aq)

(4) 1.0-g powdered Zn(s) with 2.0 M HCl(aq)

Solution:

The rate of reaction depends on such factors as surface area and the concentration. The higher the surface area, the higher the rate of reaction. Powdered zinc will react faster than a zinc cube. Higher concenration of reactants also increase the rate of the reaction. Choice 4 is the correct answer.
