Regents Chemistry Exam June 2025 Question 32

32 Which electron configuration represents the electrons in a neon atom in an excited state?

(1) 2–7 (2) 2–8

(3) 2–6–1 (4) 2–7–1

Solution:

An electron that is excited moves from a lower energy level to a higher energy level. You can find the ground state electron configuration of neon on the Periodic Table inside the Reference Table. It is 2-8. If the electron from the second energy level moves to the third, we get 2-7-1. Choice 4 is the correct answer choice.
