Which electron configuration represents the electrons in an atom of sulfur in an excited state?

August 2019 NY Regents Chemistry Exam

32 Which electron configuration represents the electrons in an atom of sulfur in an excited state? (1) 2 – 8 – 6

(2) 2 – 7 – 7

(3) 2–8– 7

(4) 2–7– 8

Solution: The electron configuration for sulfur in its most stable, ground state can be found on the Periodic Table. It is 2-8-6. When an electron gets excited, it goes to the higher energy level. For example, 2-7-7, means that the electron from the second level jumped to the third level.

Answer: 2
