Regents Chemistry Exam January 2025 Question 45

45 Which equation represents a redox reaction?

(1) C(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g)

(2) CaO(s) + H2O(l ) → Ca(OH)2(s)

(3) MgCO3(s) → MgO(s) + CO2(g)

(4) Cu(OH)2(s) → CuO(s) + H2O(l)

Solution:

A redox reaction is a reaction where the oxidation number of the element changes. For regents chemistry there is an easy trick to recognize redox reactions. If you see an element on its own on one side of the equation and a part of a compound on another side, that is a redox reaction. In choice 1, we see C on its own and then a part of CO2. Choice 1 is the correct answer choice.
