42 Which equation represents an increase in entropy?

(1) CO2(g) → CO2(s)

(2) H2O(l) → H2O(s)

(3) Br2(g) → Br2(l)

(4) I2(s) → I2(g)


Solution:

Entropy refers to disorder. Gas(g) is more disordered than liquid(l) which is more disordered than solid(s).Going from solid to gas would results in an increase in entropy. Choice 4 is the correct answer.
