Regents Chemistry Exam August 2025 Question 35

35  Which formula represents a molecule that has four electrons shared between the two atoms?

(1) Br2

(2) Cl2

(3) H2

(4) O2

Solution:

Four electrons shared means a double bond. Diatomic elements in group 16 on the Periodic Table form a double bond because they have 6 valence electrons and need 2 more to have an octet (8). Choice 4 is the correct answer choice.
