Which formula represents a molecule with an asymmetrical distribution of charge?

Regents Chemistry Exam June 2024 Question 13

13 Which formula represents a molecule with an asymmetrical distribution of charge?

(1) Cl2

(2) CO2

(3) CH4

(4) H2O

Solution:

A polar molecular has an asymmetrical distribution of charge while a nonpolar molecule has a symmetrical distribution of charge. The question is asking for an asymmetrical distribution which would be for a polar molecule. A molecule that consists of two of the same elements such as Cl2 is nonpolar. A molecule where the central atom is attached to atoms of the same element and has no lone electrons is nonpolar as well. CO2 and CH4 are nonpolar molecules. Water is a polar molecule, Choice 4 is the correct answer.
