33 Which formula represents copper(II) phosphate?

(1) Cu2PO4

(2) Cu3PO4

(3) Cu2(PO4)3

(4) Cu3(PO4)2

Solution:

Copper(II)phosphate is an ionic compound because it consists of a metal (to the left of the staircase on the Periodic table) and a polyatomic ion which can be found in table E on the Reference Table. Copper(II) is Cu²⁺. Phosphate is PO₄³⁻. We cross-multiply the oxidation numbers to determine subscripts in the formula. Cu gets a 3 from phosphate and phosphate gets a 2 from Cu. We get Cu₃(PO₄)₂, choice 4.
