Which indicator is blue in a solution that has a pH value of 7.0?

NY Regents Chemistry Exam August 2023 Question 49

49 Which indicator is blue in a solution that has a pH value of 7.0?

(1) bromcresol green

(2) methyl orange

(3) phenolphthalein

(4) thymol blue

Solution: Table M on the Reference Table lists indicators with their pH value ranges and color changes. Bromcresol green has a pH range for color change of 3.8–5.4 and changes from yellow to blue. This means any pH value under 3.8 will result in the color of yellow and any pH value higher than 5.4 will result in a blue color. pH of 7 is higher than 5.4 and would result in a blue color. Choice 1
