Which sample of matter is classified as a mixture?(1) NaCl(s) (2) CH3OH(l) (3) SO2(g)(4) KNO3 (aq)

Regents Chemistry Exam June 2024 Question 16

16 Which sample of matter is classified as a mixture?

(1) NaCl(s)

(2) CH3OH(l)

(3) SO2(g)

(4) KNO3 (aq)

Solution:

A mixture is composed of two or more elements or compounds. Let's first look at the letters inside parenthesis in the answer choices. (s) stands for solid, (l) stands for liquid, (g) stands for gas and (aq) stands for aqueous. Aqeous means dissolved in water. KNO3 aqueous means that KNO3 is dissolved in water. This is a mixture because it consists of two compounds (KNO3 and water). Choice 4 is the correct answer choice. Anytime anything dissolves in water, a homogenous mixture is formed. Choices 1, 2, and 3 represent compounds.
