Regents Chemistry Exam June 2025 Question 36

Which statement describes the freezing point of a solution prepared by dissolving NH4Cl(s) in water at 25°C?

(1)  The solution has a freezing point lower than 0°C.

(2)  The solution has a freezing point equal to 0°C.

(3)  The solution has a freezing point equal to 25°C.

(4)  The solution has a freezing point higher than 25°C.

Solution:

When solute is added to pure solvent, a solution is created. The freezing point of solution will be LOWER than the freezing point of pure solvent (water in this case). The freezing point of water is 0C. Therefore, the freezing point of solution should be lower the 0C. Choice 1 is the correct answer.
