Regents Chemistry Exam June 2024 Question 24

24 Which term identifies a force of attraction that exists between molecules of water?

(1) covalent bonding

(2) hydrogen bonding

(3) ionic bonding

(4) metallic bonding

Solution:

Intermolecular forces are forces of attraction between molecules. Intermolecular forces include: dipole-dipole forces, hydrogen bonding and London dispersion forces. Hydrogen bonding exists between molecules that have OH, NH or HF. Water has the formula of H2O and has hydrogen bonding between it's molecules. Choice 2 is the correct answer.
